Bachelors Beware....

          Ladies, don your red petticoats and catch yourself a man, it's the Ladies' Privilege- better know as Leap Day. According to old tradition, today is the day any lady may propose to a man and if he should refuse, he pays a hefty fine in the form of a dress, money, or gloves to hide the ringless hands of his rejected lover (just so long as she had her red petticoat on when proposing).

There are many versions of this tradition, some involving breeches instead of petticoats and others allowing ladies the privilege the entire year.

I'd never heard of this tradition before today and I'm getting such a chuckle out of these vintage leap year post cards.
